Canvas - Creating and Replying to Discussions

This page illustrates how to create and reply to Discussion topics in Canvas.

Your instructors that use Canvas may ask you to reply to or occasionally create your own Discussion topics for assignments. Replying to a discussion and creating your own discussion topic are two very different things. Most instructors will ask you to REPLY to a discussion topic that they have already provided you. However, there might be some occasions where your instructor will ask you to create your own discussion topic. Please read the instructions below about how to reply to a discussion that your instructor has provided, and how to create your very own discussion topic.

There is a video tutorial located at the bottom of this document

Replying to a Discussion

1) Open up the Discussions tab on your course’s left navigation bar.

2) Click on the title of the discussion topic that you wish to reply to.

3) Click on the Reply bar underneath the main discussion post. This opens up the text editor for you to enter your response.

4) Type your reply in the text box that opens below the discussion post. When you are finished writing, click on the green Post Reply button on the bottom-right of the text editor. This will submit your response for the rest of your peers to see on this page.

Creating a New Discussion

1) Open up the Discussions tab on your course’s left navigation bar.

2) Click on the green +Discussion button on the upper-right side of your screen.

3) Enter the Title and Discussion content that you wish to discuss in the appropriate text boxes.

4) Once you're finished, press the green Save button at the bottom-right of your screen to submit the Discussion post. This will make it visible to your peers and instructor(s).
