Removing Past Honorlock Safeguards from Canvas Quizzes

This article shows how to remove Honorlock from Canvas quizzes now that UW-Parkside has switched automated proctoring services.

UW-Parkside has changed vendors for our automated quiz proctoring needs, so instructors will need to remove the Honorlock requirement from their existing Canvas quizzes after they get copied into future courses. Students will be locked out of Honorlock-enabled quizzes, so it is critical to remove the requirement from any previous quizzes moving forward.

You can remove Honorlock from your course's navigation menu from the Navigation tab in your course's Settings page. Our Knowledgebase article titled "Hiding the People Tab From Course Navigation Bar" shows how to remove a link, such as Honorlock, from your course's navigation menu.

How to Remove the Honorlock Barriers from a Classic Quiz

The instructor simply needs to open the quiz's settings to disable the access code requirement and delete the Honorlock widget from the quiz's introduction text block.

Removing the Access Code/Password

You'll need to disable the access code requirement from the quiz settings. You can also delete Honorlock's preset password for good measure.

For the Classic Quiz tool, the access code setting is located halfway down the quiz settings page, just above the due date settings box.

Open the Classic Quiz's settings page and disable the access code setting near the bottom of the settings list.

For the New Quizzes tool, open the quiz building interface, switch to the Settings tab, and disable the access code requirement.

Open the Settings tab in the New Quizzes builder to disable the access code.

If you already enabled Respondus LockDown Browser on the quiz before removing the old Honorlock access code from the quiz, the old Honorlock password may have gotten saved in the Respondus settings for that quiz. You can delete this access code by opening the LockDown Browser page in your course, opening the proctoring settings for that quiz, and deleting the text in the Access Code text box.

Removing the Honorlock Widget

The Honorlock widget was automatically placed at the bottom of the quiz's introduction text box. Scroll to the bottom of the text box and delete the widget. The entire widget is contained within a single invisible frame, so the entire thing will get deleted in one go.

For Classic Quizzes, this is the text box you see when you first open the quiz editing page. For New Quizzes, this is the text box at the top of the quiz builder page when you first open build mode.

Delete the Honorlock widget from the introductory text box of your quiz. It's usually located at the very bottom of the text box.
