Canvas Office 365 LTI Authorized to Wrong Account

This article contains troubleshooting steps to help resolve Canvas/Office 365 LTI access issues.

Occasionally, the Canvas - Office 365 LTI Tool will authorize to the wrong account, causing a communication issue between Canvas and O365. This usually happens when a user has both a personal and a UW-Parkside O365 account.

The issue most commonly presents itself as claiming the user does not have access to O365 and/or to a specific O365 file due to insufficient permissions.

Example of most the common error message

Suggested Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1

Verify Access - This is typically only an issue for files shared to students from an instructor. Simply ask the instructor to verify the permissions include the student(s). You can move on to Step 2 while waiting for this response.

Step 2

Enable 3rd Party Cookies - Ensure that 3rd Party Cookies are enabled. (See specific browser instructions on how to enable 3rd Party Cookies: Chrome | Firefox | Safari | Edge)

Step 3

Verify Office 365 Login - If the user is logged in to O365 with a different username (non-UWP ID, different user, etc), their Canvas account may be reaching for that instead of their UWP account.

Step 4

Remove LTI Tokens and Reauthorize

Reauthorize the Tool in Canvas

  1. While still logged into both locations (Office 365 and Canvas), navigate back to the location in the course that was causing the permission/access issue. You may be prompted to "re-authenticate" into Office 365; however, the authentication may occur automatically.
