CANVAS - How to assign Extra Credit using Weighted Assignment Groups

This article contains information on how to create extra credit assignments using weight based assignment groups in Canvas.

Creating a weighted Extra Credit Assignment Group

  1. From your course navigation, click on Assignments.
  2. Click the three-dot menu icon, then select Assignment Group Weight.

  3. Check the box to enable "Weight final grade based on assignment groups" > Set the assignment weights for your Assignment Groups > Save.

  4. Within Assignments, create an additional group for Extra Credit, then set the desired weight.
  5. Create Extra Credit Assignment(s) in the corresponding Extra Credit Assignment Group.
    Note: You can add as many extra credit assignments to the group as you'd like.

Setting up extra credit using weighted assignment groups will ensure that students who do not submit extra credit, will not be negatively impacted.


Important to Remember: When setting up extra credit assignments this way, you will need to wait until the end of the semester to grade them. The addition of the extra credit assignment group will cause the "total percentage" to rise above 100%; therefore, if the extra credit assignments were to be graded prior to the end of the semester, the extra credit would be calculated in with the other assignment groups, which would result in a misrepresentation of the actual percentage/grade that the student has in the course.
