Student Accessibility Services (SAS) - DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS FAQ’S FOR INSTRUCTORS

This article contains a list of frequently asked questions regarding student disability accommodations for UW-Parkside Instructors

How will students notify me of accommodations?

  • Students will forward an email from Student Accessibility Services (SAS) or provide a paper copy of ‘letter’ with approved accommodations as soon as they are approved.

What if the student has questions?

  • We ask them to talk to you during office hours within the first two weeks of class or within one week of receiving their letter.
  • They should let you know what accommodation(s) they will use.

How do I need arrange for testing accommodations?

  • Instructors should email the test to sas@uwp.edu. If other arrangements need to be made, please let us know.
  • Use an exam cover sheet for each separate exam and make a notation of what is allowed for the class (e.g., open or closed book, notes, basic or scientific calculator, etc.).
  • Note how much time the class is allowed to take the test, SAS will add the extended time for the student.

My exam is online (or has a listening portion), what do I do?

  • Extend the time (online), prepare a media clip or CD for listening portion. If the exam is not timed (open for 24 hours), no need to extend it for student with disability.

My class is in the evening or late afternoon, what do I do?

  • Testing hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am4:00 pm.
  • Arrange with the student the day/time to take the exam, preferably earlier in the day.

A student has an accommodation of a note taker, what is my responsibility?

  • If a student is approved for a note taker, instruct the student to contact SAS.  Per student request, SAS will arrange for the student to access Sonocent Audio Notetaker app.

A student has an accommodation of attendance flexibility, what is my responsibility?

  • Refer to Attendance Flex Policy included in student’s emailing of letter.
  • If a student has an occasional flare up due to a medical condition, they may miss a class. They should email you within 24 hours of this occurring and not miss assignment deadlines without your permission. If your syllabus has a maximum absence allowance, please take into consideration this still may occur even after the allowance is met.
