Windows 10 - Getting Started

Some tips on getting comfortable with Windows 10 and how to prevent common issues with Outlook in Windows 10, as well as how to modify the start menu.

Important Note Regarding Outlook in Windows 10:

Close Outlook at least 10 minutes before restarting or logging out of your machine at the end of your work day. This practice will prevent a number of common problems with Outlook that are time-consuming to resolve. If there is an Outlook icon (gray or blue) in the notification area of the task bar, Outlook is not done closing and you should not log out/restart/shut down.

How to Log In/Out:

Most campus users are comfortable with Ctrl-Alt-Delete to sign in each morning, but Ctrl-Alt-Delete can also be used to sign out of your computer. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and select "Sign Out". You can also Restart or Shut down the machine. UWGB IT recommends restarting the computer at the end of the work day.

An alternative method is to click on the start menu to log out. You click on the Windows icon (start menu), then the user icon, and then "sign out." See below:

How to Find Programs/Applications:

Navigate to the start menu and then search for a program in the search bar at the bottom of the screen. It may take a minute to search, especially if this is the first time you have used it or if you have recently installed the program.

Modifying the Start Menu:

You can simply drag icons from your start menu and jump list to pin them to your start menu. The shortcuts will then show up on the right side of your start menu each time you open it. An alternative method is to right click on any application and select "pin to start." This is helpful for applications that you use often but do not want on your desktop (usually for a more organized desktop).

You can remove pinned items from your start menu easily by right clicking on the pinned shortcut and selecting "unpin from start menu."
