Email Class List from Solar
This document explains how to email an entire class list from Solar.
Canvas has a built-in messaging tool called Inbox, and this is separate from a student's RangerMail. If you would like to email your entire class list, you will have to do so using Solar, not Canvas. In Solar on your homepage, you will see a list of all the courses you are teaching. Off to the left of each course, there's an icon that looks like three people. Click on that icon and you will be taken to the corresponding course's class list:
Next, you will see a list of students enrolled in your course. You can change the drop down menu to sort by all students, enrolled students, waitlisted students, or students that have dropped the course, but it will default to students that are currently enrolled. Off to the left again, you will see a Notify column with a check box next to each individual student's name. These check boxes are available in case you want to contact an individual student or group or students as opposed to emailing your entire class:
At the very bottom of your course roster, you will see two options. The first option, Notify Selected Users, allows you to email only the specific student(s) you've selected using the check boxes. The second option, Notify All Users, allows you to contact your entire class list at once:
From there, whether you're contacting one student or your whole class, a dialogue box will appear that will prompt you to create your email to students. You'll notice that your instructor email populates the "to" section and your student emails will all appear in the "bcc" section. This is done to ensure student privacy:
You are able to change the subject and create your message under the Message Text section. Once you are satisfied with your email, click the Send Notification button to send the email out to your students. You will receive a copy of the email in your own RangerMail.
