Docking stations - How to keep my laptop on while docked?

This guide details how to change the settings on your laptop to allow you to close your laptop's lid and continue working while docked.

First, hit ⊞win + S on your keyboard, or click on the magnifying glass next to the start button as shown below:

Search icon next to start icon

Then, type in "Change what closing the lid does" as shown. Click on the first result or hit Enter.

Search bar - change what closing the lid does

This will now open up the Control Panel to a settings panel for this:

Control Panel > Change what closing the lid does

Then, click all the dropdown boxes under 'Plugged in' and set them to 'Do Nothing'. Finally, click 'Save changes':

Control Panel > Change what closing the Lid does

From here, your laptop will stay on and you can close your laptop's lid while docked/plugged in and continue to work. If you run into any issues, please feel free to email us at servicedesk@uwp.edu.

Please note: the same will apply when charging your laptop from the wall. Be sure to put your laptop in sleep mode or turn it off if you are charging it off of the wall. Additionally, ensure that your laptop is in sleep mode when stowing it in a bag, as if it turns on while stowed it may overheat.
