Account Security Tips for Students
This document contains technology and account security tips for students.
What you need to know about UW-Parkside email accounts.
An email account address is composed of two parts; a username and a domain name. You will notice that your (student) email domain name is @rangers.uwp.edu, while the faculty and staff email domain name is @uwp.edu.
Key takeaways:
- Student email: username@rangers.uwp.edu
- Faculty/Staff email: username@uwp.edu
How to keep your account and personal information secure
It is extremely important to remember that UW-Parkside faculty and staff, including the Chancellor, Provost, and Vice Chancellors, will NEVER:
- Contact you about a work opportunity.
All on campus job offers go through Handshake. Note: If a job offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. - Text you about your account or ask for personal information.
Campus personnel will never ask you for your name/email/personal information to be sent in a text to them. Faculty and staff already have access to your contact information. - Ask for your Password.
We will never ask for your password. It is yours, and yours alone. Keep it safe. Do not share it with anyone.
What you can do:
- Never share personal information through email or text.
- Never respond to job offers or other emails from a fellow student.
- If you get an Okta multi-factor authentication push to your phone that you did not initiate, do not accept it!
- If you are unsure about the legitimacy of an email, send/forward it to servicedesk@uwp.edu. We would much rather let you know that it is a legit email than have your account compromised.
- Remember that all Campus Technology Services (CTS) announcements and/or email communications will come from either campus.technology@uwp.edu or servicedesk@uwp.edu.
